| Blah, into the 60s as feared. Kremlin Cup a good chance to pick up points as Masha has nothing to defend. |

Hi, Jim and Jughead! In the Grand Slams Masha will be in the 33-64 second quartile grouping, so she can avoid the top players at least in the first round. Winning the first round at each of the Grand Slams would be a good goal to improve her ranking. Being at 63 does make it a scramble to get direct ins to any of the higher tier 32 slot tournaments, fear there will be qualies in those cases. For the 64 slot tournaments, Masha is ok. All in all 63 isn't all that bad a place to start 2010, if she had fallen to 73 it would have been much tougher.
That said, as always, hope springs eternal. |

For the record, here are Masha's year ending rankings in singles since she joined the big girl's circuit:
2009 63
2008 29
2007 31
2006 30
2005 25
2004 111
2003 122
2002 417
2005 at age 18 was Masha's breakout year. She was pretty consistent for 4 years. On could say 2009 is an outlier. |

How much of a bearing does her 2009 ranking have on 2010 other than maybe qualification matches early on? I'm not sure I understand the whole thing about defending points.
Essentially, if she plays well, her ranking goes up and the higher ranked she is the better her match-ups will be in the early rounds, no? |
